Rabies may also occur, though in very rare cases, through inhalation of virus-containing spray or through organ transplants.
The DOH said that rabies is considered to be a neglected disease, which is percent fatal though percent preventable. It is not among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the country but it is regarded as a significant public health problem because first it is one of the most acutely fatal infections and it is responsible for the death of to Filipinos annually.
Mario Baquilod, director of the DOH Disease Prevention and Control Bureau, also revealed the good news that 49 municipalities were already declared rabies-free.
To stamp out human rabies, the DOH is calling on those who have been bitten by either a pet or stray animal, to avail of free vaccines against the deadly infection in all the animal bite treatment centers across the country.
The full course of post-exposure prophylaxis, equivalent to eight doses of anti-rabies vaccines would be administered free of charge to those seeking emergency treatment for animal bites. These free vaccines could easily be availed of in the animal bite treatment centers nationwide. The vaccines used for both pre-exposure and post-exposure vaccination are the same, but the immunization schedule differs.
Rabies immunoglobulin is used only for post-exposure prophylaxis. Modern vaccines of cell-culture or embryonated-egg origin are safer and more effective than the older vaccines, which were produced in brain tissue.
Pre-exposure vaccination should be offered to people at high risk of exposure to rabies, such as laboratory staff working with rabies virus, veterinarians, animal handlers and wildlife officers, and other individuals living in or travelling to countries or areas at risk.
Travellers with extensive outdoor exposure in rural areas — such as might occur while running, bicycling, hiking, camping, backpacking, etc. Preexposure vaccination is advisable for children living in or visiting countries or areas at risk, where they provide an easy target for rabid animals. For adults, the vaccine should always be administered in the deltoid area of the arm; for young children under 1 year of agethe anterolateral area of the thigh is recommended.
Rabies vaccine should never be administered in the gluteal area: administration in this manner will result in lower neutralizing antibody titres. To reduce the cost of cell-derived vaccines for pre-exposure rabies vaccination, intradermal ID vaccination in 0.
This method of administration is an acceptable alternative to the standard intramuscular administration, but it is technically more demanding and requires appropriate staff training and qualified medical supervision.
Concurrent use of chloroquine can reduce the antibody response to intradermal application of cell-culture rabies vaccines. People who are currently receiving malaria prophylaxis or who are unable to complete the entire three-dose pre-exposure series before starting malarial prophylaxis should therefore receive pre-exposure vaccination by the intramuscular route. Periodic booster injections are not recommended for general travellers.
Ideally, the first dose should be administered on the day of exposure and the second 3 days later. This should be combined with thorough wound treatment. Modern rabies vaccines are well tolerated. The frequency of minor adverse reactions such as local pain, erythema, swelling and pruritus varies widely from one report to another. Occasional systemic reactions like malaise, generalized aches and headaches have been noted after intramuscular or intradermal injections.
It is given to high risk individuals such as staff in rabies laboratories or hospitals handling rabies patients, veterinarians, animal handlers and field workers.
The group stressed that the Rabies Act of mandates rabies immunization for children aged years living in highly endemic areas. It consists of 3 doses given on days 0, 7 and 21 or Fact checked by Robert Carlson, MD.

According to the World Health Organization WHOhealth is not merely the absence of a disease but a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. With that being said, our physical wellness, the first layer of our health, can make or break our overall wellness.
Today, while getting sick is still inevitable, safeguards from various illnesses are easily available, for free! In the Philippines, some vaccines are immediately given to a newborn, while a full series follows throughout childhood, in order to eliminate the common diseases that put children at risk. To date, illnesses such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis whooping coughpoliomyelitis poliomeasles, mumps, rubella, and haemophilus influenzae type B infections are now completely avoidable through vaccination.
Vaccines are considered to be among the greatest human inventions of all time. They are directly responsible for the increased life expectancy we enjoy by preventing childhood death from diseases such as measles, pertussis, and diphtheria. The CDC estimates that, among children born in the last 20 years, vaccinations will prevent more than 21 million hospitalizations anddeaths. But beyond saving lives, this reduction in disease means a reduction in the cost of treating these illnesses.
This translates into vaccines being not only lifesaving but money-saving as well. How exactly do vaccines save money? When a child gets sick with a vaccine-preventable illness as with any serious illnesshe or she will need to seek treatment and this, of course, is going to cost.
Now if the child gets a serious complication, he or she may need to be hospitalized, and in worse cases, treatment could drag on for weeks or months. So there are hospital bills, medications, and doctor visits before, during, and after the illness. Tragically, if there are long-term complications, such as deafness from mumps or brain damage from measles, there will be costs associated with this as well adaptive devices, special education requirements, etc.
If you want to eliminate or at least minimize the chances of your child getting sick, complete their vaccination. The less trips you make to the doctor, the less expenses it will impose on your pockets. While these vaccines may only prevent common illnesses, these illnesses can progress to more complicated diseases, which can be difficult and expensive to treat!
Upon birth, they are immediately vaccinated against certain diseases, while some vaccinations are given at a later age. These vaccinations can last a lifetime and are given for free by the government through their Expanded Program on Immunization. Millions of vaccines are administered every year. These prevent many from suffering and save many of lives. Scientific studies have well established their effectiveness.
Side effects such as fever and body malaise may be common, but complicated ones are relatively rare and usually mild in intensity, limited in duration and easy to treat. The more common vaccines that are widely used today have gone through a complete test, and are formulated to mitigate the side-effects. Meanwhile, the infamous dengue vaccine was still on its testing stage upon its distribution to the public. However, if you prefer to get your child vaccinated by private practice physicians pediayou might have to spend a little more than what you would in a barangay health center.
Below is a rough estimate of the cost of vaccines in private clinics:. The parents may have to take time off of work, incurring loss of income. There may be insurance co-payments to meet. If the child has long-term consequences from the illness, there may also be lost opportunities for income.
And, if this child is inadvertently exposed to others, it might lead to a cascading public health crisis, causing daycares to shut down and public health agencies mandating quarantines.
