Can I use "CPU OPT" to power my top case fan? Additional fan questions inside...

Bobsy Member. Jan 5, 4 That's right: my new hardware has been sitting there for the last four months! The board has two CPU fan headers and two system fan headers. It was one of the reasons why I selected this board. CPU fan control is wonderful. Front intake fan control is fine. Rear exhaust fan control is a disaster. It makes more noise than my old Antec Tri-Cool, that was set to Low.

Can I attach case fan to CPU fan header?

I suppose it will be "conservative", meaning that it will spin up when the CPU gets hot. Any thoughts? I should have gone with an Asus board. I won't make that mistake again. Feb 21, 2, 4 I do use Windows. I will check SpeedFan out.

I hope it can read the temp sensors and adjust fan speeds accordingly. May 22, 47 0 Yup can use any fan on any fan connector without any ill effects.

BonzaiDuck Lifer. Jun 30, 14, I tried Speedfan, but it's unable to "take control" of the fan speeds. All computer systems are equipped with a set of fans that help keep things cool and thus prevent overheating. The CPU and system fans are the only ones, however, that are directly attached to the motherboard. The problem is that sometimes these fans can get too loud.

It is difficult to focus on your work when the constant whirring of these fans is making your device sound like an aircraft ready for takeoff.

This article looks at possible solutions for this problem by evaluating the ways in which you can control and set a custom fan speed. First things first, you might be wondering just how your fans got so loud in the first place. The most common reasons are as follows. But, if you would rather just fix this problem instead of going through the hassle of getting a new PC, then read on as we explain how to control CPU fan speed.

While fan control software might be the first thing that comes to mind, it is useful to explore a couple of other options as well. The following methods are ordered from most to least direct. Most modern computers already have built-in controls there. To enter the BIOS, you need to reboot your computer and press a certain key. Your computer will tell you which one. For instance, your screen may say Press Delete to enter setup once you reboot.

This is your cue. In some computers, the F12 key might be used instead. A slight problem here is that you will now have to look for the fan settings in the BIOS because the location and title vary with different systems. Generally, though, you should be able to find it under the BIOS menus. You will need to enable this feature to be able to tweak fan settings. You now have two options for controlling fan speed: you can tweak either voltage or PWM. Lowering either one will mean a slower fan.

However, PWM can get speeds relatively lower and is slightly more efficient. Ultimately, the option you choose depends on how the fans are plugged into the motherboard. Long story short, remember:. Lastly, this method will only allow you to control the speed of CPU and system fans. In which case you should move on to the next method.

If your fans start acting up after doing this, you might want to look into the more detailed factors at play here. The most popular option is SpeedFan. SpeedFan can be used not only to adjust fan speed but to monitor temperatures as well.Joinsubscribers and get a daily digest of news, geek trivia, and our feature articles. By submitting your email, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. If you are using a laptop or other off-the-shelf computer like a Dellchances are your computer automatically controls its fans to some extent already.

This is especially common and necessary! In addition, your motherboard can either have 3-pin sockets or 4-pin sockets or both! Got it? A lot of modern computers have fan controls built right in—you just need to dig into the BIOS. Once in the BIOS, you may have to hunt around to find your fan controls. Not every motherboard will have all these options—some simplify it more than others—but most will follow this general pattern.

But then your temperature will increase, because the fan has slowed down, creating a situation in which the fan is constantly ramping up, slowing down, then ramping up again every minute or two.

You may have to play with these values a bit to get them just right. Your SYS fans may have similar options, or you may only be able to set them to certain constant speeds.

Some motherboards may also come with their own applications to control the fans, in addition to the built-in BIOS options. You may also note that some values are absurd—like my Temp2, Remote 1, and Remote 2 temperatures, which show as degrees Celsius. This helps declutter the main window. Click the Configure button and head to the Advanced tab. Use the arrow buttons to raise or lower the speed of your first fan—in my case, Pwm1.

Since I can also hear and see the inside of my computer case you may need to open yours upI know that this is the fan connected to my CPU. To rename an item, just highlight it and press F2. When you press OK, the changes will propagate to the main SpeedFan interface, as shown below.

You can repeat this process with your other fans. Click the Configure button to head back into the configuration menu. You get the idea. Your values may vary for your particular CPU, fan, and preferences. Keep an eye on your fan RPMs and temperatures—you should find that they react just as you set out in the Temperatures and Speeds tab.Menu Menu.

Hi, I'm about to install some case fans and have a few questions. First off, is there any benefit to loading up my case with fans? I want to dust my PC out as little as possible and maximize airflow. Why does the fan power splitter have three pins on one side and four on the other see Newegg photo for reference?

If I decide to put a fan on the bottom for intake, I'll likely need some kind of adapter to power it.

CPU Fan Error: What It Is and How to Fix It

What kind of adapter would I need? I assume I could use a spare legacy molex power adapter from my PSU but would that mean I need a molex - fan power adapter? I understand if no one will be able to answer this but my case has the option for a second fan underneath the pre-installed front case fan.The CPU fan error is a common error message that can appear when starting up a Windows desktop computer or laptop.

The warning is usually triggered after a computer has shut itself down due to overheating. This may happen when the fan or fans are unable to cool the hardware sufficiently. While frustrating, the CPU error message and the forced shutdown indicate the computer's safeguards are working properly.

If the fans aren't working properly and the computer continues to overheat, it may result in permanent damage to a number of hardware components. There are ways to confirm the cause of overheating and the resulting error messages, as well as ways to fix them. The CPU fan error commonly appears during the boot up or start-up process on a Windows PC; it does not appear during regular Windows operation.

The error message text usually appears as one of the following:. A CPU fan error on start-up is typically due to physical damage to the fan, incorrect settings, or external factors causing the computer to overheat and force the fan to run at unusually high speeds.

Dust or other objects obstructing the device's air vents can also cause CPU fan errors. Because CPU fan errors can be caused by both hardware and software problems, fixes for the errors are equally varied and involve checking specific settings, as well as the internal CPU fan. Follow these tips to avoid CPU overheating and error messages.

Move your computer. Leaving your computer in an area with a lot of heat or sunlight can cause it to overheat and shut down, no matter how hard the fan is working. Try moving your computer to a cooler room or making sure it's never placed in direct sunlight throughout the day. Stop overclocking. A consequence of overclocking is a dramatic increase in system heat that can't be managed by the default fans.

This can damage circuits and cause frequent shutdowns and overheating errors. Clean the air vents. The easiest way to clean the vents is to remove the brush from your vacuum cleaner, then use it at full power to suck any dust and debris out. Alternatively, use an airgun or canned air to blast the dust out. Clean the CPU fans. For this step, you'll need to turn your computer off, unplug it from the power source, and open up the case.

Once opened, you can clean the interior and remove dust with an air gun or canned air. Refrain from spraying any cleaning agents onto any parts, as this can seriously damage a variety of components. Many devices, such as the Microsoft Surface line of productsare not designed to be opened, and doing so may void the warranty or cause permanent damage. If you're unsure, reference your device's official support manual or call customer service.

Check your CPU fan. While you have your computer opened, physically check your device's fans to make sure they haven't come loose or fallen out of place. Depending on your fan model, you should be able to fasten your fans back into place with a screwdriver or glue. Whenever you're checking anything in the interior of an electrical device, make sure that it is completely turned off and disconnected from all power sources.

Remember to choose Shut Down, not Sleep, when turning your computer off. Check your CPU fan's location. If you've installed the CPU fan yourselfensure that it is installed in the correct location. It should be connected to the CPU header on the motherboard.

If you've connected it elsewhere, the fan may run when the computer is turned on but it won't be sufficiently cooling the CPU, which is its main purpose. We use it to build big projects, we load it up with everything from Hot Wheels to Harleys, and sometimes we party or just hang out with the guys there.
